Speaking & Events

In Portland, Oregon, Ryan has been active in the design and beer communities creating, managing, and moderating beer branding events. Here are a few of those events…

Rough Draught – A Live Beer Design Brouhaha

Design Week Portland – April 2018

Four designers paired with four breweries each collaborated on a special beer for this event. During the event, attendees sampled the brews and submitted names for each. A winning name was picked for each beer, at which point the designers then had 90 minutes to design a label for that beer, live in front of the audience. Harvey Shepard, founder of Oh Beautiful Beer, was the special guest speaker and presented some label history along with some current design trends.

Branding Seminar

PDX Beer Week – June 2017

The organizer of PDX Beer Week tapped Ryan to assist in the content and moderation of a yearly branding seminar. Designers and branding experts versed in the beer industry presented a cohesive set of ideas and designs to an engaged audience.

Designing for a Craft Beer Brand

Design Week Portland – April 2017

Ryan assembled a panel of illustrators, marketing professionals, designers, brewery owners, and branding experts like the Brand Manager for Widmer Brothers Brewing. Featured as main headquarters event for Design Week Portland, this event sold out with over 250 in attendance.

Instruction

In 2017, Ryan worked with Oregon State University to teach a workshop on beer branding and design. As part of a continuing education program, OSU created a week-long course called Craft Brewery Startup Workshop. People from all over come out to Oregon to participate in an interactive workshop and gain insights from professionals covering all aspects of starting up a brewery.
